Gentile Bellini
St. Lorenzo Giustiniani

1465
Egg tempera on canvas, 87 x 61 in. (221 x 155 cm.)
Gallerie della Accademia, Venice

Many images of Lorenzo Giustiniani picture him in a close-fitting cap shaped as here. The gaunt face would reflect accounts of the saint's life that stress his extreme ascetism.

According to the Save Venice web page on this painting, it is believed to have been commissioned as a processional banner by the monastic order to which the saint originally belonged, the Canons Regular of San Giorgio in Alga.
